Traveling Alone? Do Volunteer Work
“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” – Helen Keller
I love to travel solo. I grab my cameras, kite equipment and some clothes and I tell my friends “Ciao for now!” However, I do understand that not everybody is so keen on traveling alone. So I suggest that you can do some volunteer work. It is a great way to learn more about your new environment, you get to know some locals and hopefully pick up on some cool cultural things. Besides that you are a guest in the country that you are visiting so you can do something for their community.
This year I had the chance to work as a teacher for Project I AM, which is a township filmschool in Langa. Around Cape Town you have several different townships and Langa is the oldest one. In 3 weeks we helped 6 students with their storytelling, production and creating video-skills. After the 3 weeks they get a certificate and they can look for internships in the film industry in and around Cape Town.
Those 3 weeks with Project I AM where amazing and still everyday I am so thankful that I grabbed that opportunity. It is so much fun to share your knowledge, create beautiful memories with the team of volunteers and to learn some amazing life lessons from the students. For me it was mind blowing to realize how much you can give to the community while traveling alone.
One Love,
