Holy Cross RC Primary School
“The library is the heart of the school, it’s the hub” – Ron Black
Thanks to PendaTrust and The Otto Foundation, a local literacy-focused public benefit organization that works with schools in District Six, I was able to help the Holy Cross RC Primary School in Cape Town. Because of a big fire the school library got completely destroyed. There were no more books left and the all the students were very down because of this lost.
The Otto Foundation asked me if I could go to the school to take some photos of the students for their fundraising campaign. Of course I said yes and made an appointment with the school principal. The principal explained to me that their mission is to double the literacy rate at the school through this intervention. All done by fundraising.
When I arrived there were almost no kids at the school because it was the last day before the summer holiday and most of the kids already left or did not even come to the school. Oepsie… what to do?
Lucky me there was a small group of students and I asked them if they could help me with some great images for the fundraising. I shot some images of the kids while they were reading some books. They kept on laughing at me because they really did not see the purpose of me taking photos of them until I explained them it was for their library.
After the shoot they all thanked me that I wanted to help them because they all loved the library. Since their school is located in Distrix 6 the students saw the library as a safe place to hangout together. As soon as I am back in Cape Town I will check if it worked out with the new library.
